Manual Handling

Workplace Health and Safety

Course Overview

Most jobs involve performing some form of manual task, such as lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, or carrying. While many of these tasks are routine, some can pose a risk of musculoskeletal injury if not managed appropriately.

This course provides participants with practical guidance on managing risks associated with hazardous manual tasks in accordance with the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WA) and the Code of Practice: Hazardous Manual Tasks. It explains how to apply the risk management process—hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk control—to tasks involving physical exertion, repetitive movements, or awkward postures.

Persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) have a duty to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that workers are not exposed to hazardous manual task risks. This includes providing information, instruction, training, and supervision. This course supports that obligation by building awareness and understanding among workers and supervisors of the factors that contribute to manual task injuries and the ways those risks can be reduced or eliminated.

Body stressing remains the leading cause of lost-time injury claims in Western Australia, according to WorkCover WA. Completing this course helps organisations address one of the most persistent and costly safety challenges in the workplace—manual task injuries.
