Job Safety Analysis (JSA) & Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS)

Workplace Health and Safety

Course Overview

Completing effective risk assessments is a critical part of maintaining a safe workplace. This course provides participants with the knowledge required to correctly complete Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), in line with current work health and safety legislation.

Participants will learn how to use JSAs as a practical tool to identify hazards, assess risks, and determine appropriate control measures for specific tasks or activities. Emphasis is placed on ensuring that JSAs are clear, site-specific, and aligned with safe systems of work.

The course also covers the requirements for Safe Work Method Statements, which are mandatory for high-risk construction work as defined in the Work Health and Safety (General) Regulations 2022 (WA). Participants will gain an understanding of when SWMS are required, what they must include, and how they should be reviewed and monitored on site.

A poorly completed risk assessment can create a false sense of security, leading workers to believe that risks have been adequately controlled when they have not. This course supports improved safety outcomes by promoting quality documentation, informed risk decision-making, and compliance with legal obligations.
